What is domestic and family violence?

Domestic and family violence is a pattern of abusive behaviour in an intimate, family or household relationship that over time puts one person in a position of power over another and causes fear. It is often referred to as a pattern of coercion and control. Domestic and family violence can include, but is not limited to:

  • Physical violence
  • Sexual assault or other sexually abusive behaviour
  • Emotional or psychological abuse
  • Verbal abuse
  • Spiritual or cultural abuse
  • Economic or financial abuse.

How to protect yourself against domestic and family violence

Domestic and family violence can happen to anyone, in any kind of relationship and can impact you financially. Sometimes it’s hard to recognise if you are being financially abused. Some signs may be.

  • Restricted access to money and withholding from essentials
  • Receiving abusive messages via payment descriptions
  • Being excluded from financial decisions
  • Prevented from earning money
  • Threats of or enacting physical or emotional harm.
